Sewing

Sewing is the craft of fastening or attaching objects using stitches made with a needle and thread. Sewing is one of the oldest of the textile arts, arising in the Paleolithic era. At HHCJ Assumpta Girls’ Model Secondary School, students are trained in the craft. Here are some reasons for you to learn sewing.

  1. Sewing Saves You Money: It’s no secret that sewing can save you money. Knowing how to sew allows you to make simple repairs to garments. Hem your own jeans, sew on a missing button, repair an open seam. All of these will extend a garment’s life and save you a little money.
  2. Sewing Helps Decrease Consumption and Utilize Reused Materials: If you’re concerned about the environment then sewing should definitely be your thing. Sewing allows you to repurpose almost anything made from fabric. Thrift stores and yard sales will net you the best selection of fabrics waiting to be transformed. Upcycled thrift store curtains become throw pillows for a bed. A used duvet becomes a new shower curtain. A men’s dress shirt becomes a little girl’s dress. Add a piece of fabric to some repurposed curtains to personalize them for your home. Turn an old sweater into a beautiful throw pillow. With minimal sewing skills anything can be cut apart and turned into something unique.
  3. Sewing Gives you Flexibility: I started to touch on this in my first point, but knowing basic sewing skills gives you the flexibility to shop where you want, but also to customize your clothes to fit your needs. How many of us have found the perfect dress only to have the straps be just a little bit too long, or the waste just a little bit too low? Being able to master some basic sewing skills gives you the flexibility to customize your clothes to fit your body so that you always look like your clothes were made just for you!
  4. Sewing Saves you Time: I think that it is a common misconception that it is faster to have someone sew for you. Sure, if it is a big project and you aren’t an expert in the end it may be faster, but for a basic alteration nothing beats doing it yourself. Most seamstresses are not close by. It will take an average of 10 minutes to reach a seamstress in our neighbourhood.  You would then have to try on the clothes, have the seamstress pin them, take them off, get dresses, and check out with her, wait a few days, pick the clothes, try them on again, pay and drive home. That is a lot of time! You can actually hem a skirt from start to finish in less than 30 minutes at home. That is a lot of time saved!
  5. Home decoration: Sewing can transform a home. The interesting thing is that it doesn’t take a advanced skills, it only requires basic sewing skills to turn a low class decor into a wealthy interior decors. If you can cut fabric and sew a straight line then you can make throw pillows and curtains for every room in your house. With a little practice you can make a fabric-covered headboard, recover dining room chairs, slipcover an occasional chair, or make some custom kitchen towels. Sewing skills can make your house a home allowing your own personality to shine through ~ not to mention the money you will save.
